Because perennials are considered labor-intensive, more and more gardens are disappearing under gravel or lawns. Once established, however, perennial beds, with proper care, are actually easier to maintain than lawns and, unlike gravel, offer food and habitat for birds and insects. Beyond all practical considerations, perennial plantings are above all else: a sensory experience of form, color, fragrance, and dynamism.
