Migration und Hafenarbeit im Stadtteil Veddel

Guided Tour

With just under 5,000 inhabitants, Veddel is one of Hamburg's smallest and most diverse districts. Around 50 different nationalities live there. Hardly any other Hamburg district is as closely linked to the history of migration as Veddel. As early as 1900, the district served as a springboard for numerous emigrants to the New World. In the 1920s, Veddel acquired its still-visible buildings, which were primarily inhabited by dockworkers and their families. Since then, a vibrant, colorful district has established itself between the railway tracks and streets, which we will explore in more detail on a walking tour. Afterwards, we will visit the former Warehouse G and delve into the dark chapter of forced labor in the Port of Hamburg. The tour concludes with a visit to the German Port Museum and the four-masted barque PEKING. The redevelopment of the Grasbrook district and the resulting changes for Veddel and the Port Museum will also be a topic of discussion on our tour. The tour takes place from 12:30 pm to 4 pm on the following dates: June 19 | October 16, 2026. Guide: Anna Prochotta.
