»An incredibly passionate piece« is how cellist Daniel Müller-Schott describes Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante, Op. 125, calling it a »journey between desperate lyricism and driving rhythms«. For the composer himself, however, the Cello Concerto was something of a problem child. A first version was written between 1933 and 1938, but met with little enthusiasm from audiences or fellow musicians. Prokofiev began revising it in 1940 and reworked it again in 1950 at the suggestion of cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. In its final form as the Sinfonia Concertante, the demanding work went on to become a milestone of the cello repertoire. All’s well that ends well.
